Shears Family Tree
Hi Fred I'm just at the very beginning of trying to trace my
family history and came across your page. My grandparents were
Leonard and Alma Shears, my grandfather (b. 1901) coming from the
Shears family of King's Lynn, Norfolk (UK), who were associated with
the "Lynn News" (newspaper). It's a long shot, but if you know
anything, I'd be really grateful? Many thanks.

Shears guest book
Hello, I live in Keighley West Yorkshire. My father was
Douglas R Shears He had a brother Geoffrey and a sister Nancy.
Their father was William Shears His father was John Shears The
above all lived in Bradford.
John Shears' father, a mason,
came to Bradford from Devon at the time the Bradford Town (City)
Hall was being built.
Perhaps there is some connection with
the Shears' who lived and emigrated from Brixham!

I heard that the Minister of Tourism in the African nation of Sierra
Leone was a man called Shears. Don't know anything about his history
but slaves were sometimes named after their masters so maybe the
name got to Africa that way. Also there were a number oif Blacks
from Nova Scotia who went back to Africa (SIerra Leone) so that
could be another connection. Any info from elsewhere?

Further to your listing of JAMES SHEARS sailing on Carrick Castle,
Gravesend -Otago,30 March 1871. James was my grandfather's
brother and came to New Zealand and started a brickworks in Timaru.
In 1874 he sent for his family to emigrate to New Zealand and 12
people travelled on the Waitangi as you have also noted leaving
London 1st August 1874. For some reason not known my grandfather
and his family did not come with them, they left London in November
1879 on the Westland and arrived in Lyttleton 90 days later. The
family consisted of: Benjamin Shears b Clapham 1848 and his wife
Annie Cooke married 6th September 1873 at Attcliffe,Yorkshire.and
their children Benjamin Cooke (5) James (3) & Annie Emma (1)
They settled in Timaru and Ben joined his brother James in the
brickmaking enterprise. I have a brick with J S in the 'frog'.
The had 13 children in all I am the eldest son of the 13th. I
note that there seem to be a lot of Shears born or living in

was never especially annoying (it makes your hands close up - and
rarely causes the same in feet; and very, very rarely elsewhere in

but less so in North America. In North America, in-patient surgery
is required as the process described on the website is not yet well
known. It runs in the family. Well, my branch anyway. Grr! why can't I press the buttons on the mouse? : )

Shears - Adelaide, Australia
My parents,Lesley & Gordon Shears, migrated to Adelaide (Australia)
30 years this September, leaving all of the many many relatives back
in the UK. I have two brothers Brendan (31) and Martin (25). Martin
and myself were both born in Australia.
My father was one of
eight children of Jim/James & (can't remember my Grandmothers
name!)Shears.. he grew up in Dagenham, Essex UK. Although I have met
most of my living relatives & we still have contact with most of
them, I am not sure of any other history.
I believe my
Grandfather or perhaps great Grandfather originated from New York.
Unfortunately with families in those days being rather large, age
differences and my parents moving to Australia I was never fortunate
enough to meet any of my grandparents.
I am unaware of any
living family residing in Australia that we are related to. It would
be interesting to find out if there are any other Shears here and
the family history.

Looking for Answers for Paternal
History I'm writing you from Florida... am trying
to find out some history on my Dad's side. All I know for sure is my
Grandfather's name was Otis Stanley Shears (d.1977 or 1979) and my
Grandmother's name in Ruth. They lived in Sturgis,Michigan and had 2
sons,Robert D. Shears (my father) and Roger Lee (d.1995). Am hoping
somewhere out there there is someone who would know more about the
tree in which I am inquiring about.I am led to believe that we are
homesteaded in the Michigan/ Indiana area. Know my grandfather had a
brother known as "Spike",but not sure how many siblings.

first things I looked at were the arms held by members of the Shears
family. Firstly, please note that it is incorrect to assume
the arms of someone else who just happened to have the same surname
as us. To do so is to declare (almost certainly falsely) that you
are their descendant. In effect you are disowning your own parents.
If you want arms of your own, you can have these issued to you quite
cheaply by the South African Bureau of Heraldry. http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~heraldry/page_sa_boh.html
tells you how. Having got that out of the way, there are two
former Shears' who have been granted arms. One (don't know who,
don't know when) was granted the arms shown on this site, namely
"Or, three crosses crosslet sable", with a crest of a "a talbot's
head erased proper, collared and lined or". No motto. In English,
this means three crosses with arms of equal length (like a Swiss
cross,
